Overview of Genesis G90

The Genesis G90 is the successor to the Hyundai Equus. A four-door luxury sedan, the G90 is the first vehicle badged with Hyundai's new luxury label. Wrapping it all up is a spare, strong design punctuated by few details. The G90's shape owes some design cues to the recent Hyundai Vision G concept, while it steers clear of the pastiche of cues put together on the former Equus. It's a formal, powerful look that uses sparing chrome and LEDs to give it character. The cockpit sports a horizontally themed dash with a wide band of wood trim, capped by stitched leather trim and dressed with a ribbon of metallic trim. Controls are grouped into logical clusters: gauges, infotainment, climate controls, and a touch-input puck mark the driver's perimeter. In short order, the Genesis brand will also get a G80 sedan (a revamped version of today's Genesis sedan) and three other new vehicles, including an SUV. For now, the flagship G90 is its only confirmed vehicle—and it's a car charged with putting the Genesis brand in the same discussion as Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Audi, and Cadillac, among others. The G90 goes on sale later in 2016 with a set of attributes meant to attract buyers of the Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, and Audi A8. It's spun off from a rear-wheel drive architecture, but offers all-wheel drive. An automatic transmission is standard, but there's a choice between V-6 and V-8 engines.Hyundai's aiming at some epic targets with the G90, so performance gets a thorough re-think from the Equus' levels of acceleration and grip. Two engines are offered: the base powerplant is a new twin-turbo, direct-injected V-6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The carry-over V-8 is a 5.0-liter unit with 420 hp and 383 lb-ft. Both are teamed to an 8-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is the standard configuration, but the G90 can be fitted with all-wheel drive that can vary torque from 100 percent to the rear wheels, to up to 40 percent to the front wheels. No 0-60 mph times or fuel economy estimates have been released. Ride and handling get upgraded in the G90 with more direct driver control. Steering feel, suspension damping, throttle responses and shift timing can be adjusted by the drive through economy, normal, sport, and individual modes; the G90's adaptive dampers are a first for Hyundai, while the redesigned steering and suspension are said to offer better responsiveness. The G90 rides on a longer wheelbase than its Equus forbear. It's now 204.9 inches long, with a 124.4-inch wheelbase, competitive with its chosen German rivals. That means 4.5 inches more in wheelbase for more rear-seat leg room and front-seat head room, Hyundai says. Most passengers will have more seat-comfort options than they can sift through in a short ride: in front it's 22-way adjustment for the driver, 16-way for the passenger, and on V-8 cars, the back outboard seats have at least 12-way adjustment. The G90 hasn't been crash-tested by the IIHS or by the NHTSA, but since it's related to the top-performing Genesis sedan, it should hit the top scores in both regimens. Along with the usual stability control and airbags, the G90 will offer adaptive cruise control with stop-start control; forward-collision alerts with automatic braking; blind-spot monitors; lane-departure warnings and lane-keeping assist, and surround-view cameras. A head-up display with nearly 10 inches of screen output is available. The G90 will also offer a 12.3-inch infotainment display, with a control device that accepts handwritten gesture input; another 7.0-inch display is factored into the gauge cluster. The G90 will also offer passengers air-quality control, ambient lighting, wireless device charging, and in back, a pair of 9.2-inch screens with remote control via the rear-seat console. Finally, the G90's generously appointed audio system tackles the Burmesters and Bang & Olufsens of the world with Lexicon hardware, 17 speakers, and a 10-inch subwoofer. Streaming music from Bluetooth, USB, or satellite radio, it's also fitted with Harman's Clari-Fi digital soun
