Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It certainly is subjective too. But when you see the Cadillac ELR in the wild, it is simply stunning. Many automotive writers say it is the best looking car in the GM Lineup. The 2016 Cadillac ELR is a 2-passanger extended-range electric, FWD vehicle. It can drive 39 miles on electricity alone. It also has a 1.4 liter 4-Cylinder gasoline engine that helps in the propulsion of the car indirectly. At times, it is sort direct too. For the most part, the gas engine charges the battery and allows the electric drivetrain to do the pushing. Combined, a full tank of gas + a fully charged ELR can go as far as 30miles before stopping to re-full or re-charge. Wat this translates into is that there is no reason to cause anxiety. It is possible for the driver to simply stop and refill the gas tank and continue on driving. Presumably, most volt owners use their cars as electric-only and rely on the gasoline engine only in odd road-trip scenarios. Compared to 2014, the 2016 year model is significantly updated. Almost every mechanical part of the car has changed for the better and with that a price drop to $65K as well. THE ELR qualifies for the full $7500 federal tax deduction. So the number Cadillac wants you to think about as starting point is $58495.Since many states add more taxpayer dollar to the kickback, like in CA for example, we can say the ELR will roughly cost $55K after all tax consideration. What this does, is that the ELR is now closer to the price range of a BMW i3 and a basic Tesla Model S. Initially sharing its drivetrain with the Chevy Volt, the two are now more different since Cadillac has a revised first generation while Volt is on generation 2. Its mechanical changes for this revision are a lot. Its drivetrain has been reprogrammed and as a result you have a 4 mile gain in range and a tiny increase in its MPGe to about 85. Torque is now boosting at 373 lb-ft and engine and motor can produce 233hp. As a result, acceleration drops 1.5 seconds when from 0-60 in now 6.4 secs. For an Electric Vehicle, that is fast. The only Electric Vehicle that can be faster tan the ELR is the performance version of a Tesla Model S. Cadillac did not stop with just a power kick, The ELR’s suspension was completely re-tuned. The ELR Changed its electronic steering, made the brakes better and a whole lot more. Another significant addition is a sport package that increases 20-inch summer-only tires, meatier steering wheel, and special sport tuning for the suspension. For the inside cabin of the ELR, a sports cut-and-sewn trim that can include semi-aniline leather. For the headliner and trim, suede microfiber is used just like on GM’s other special cars. 4G LTE connectivity, offering real-time traffic monitoring and software updates. Passengers can also stream movies on Netflix. The 2015 ELR was flop, just as Cadillac struggled to enter the luxury electric-car world. Despite that, Cadillac is committed to make its green cars competitive without losing class as it has been demonstrated with the significant changes made, it is well worth a new look with an open mind.
