Overview of Nissan

Nissan is a multinational automotive company based in Japan with an extensive history. Originally part of DAT Jidosha & CO, Nissan eventually broke away and began selling vehicles under the Datsun brand. In 1937, Nissan Motor Co, LTD started to assemble and distribute vehicles under the name “Nissan,” and by the 1950s Nissan decided it was time to expand to the worldwide market. They quickly realized the Datsun would tap into an unmet market in the United States and showed their first models at the 1958 Los Angeles Auto Show.

U.S Expansion

In 1960, soon after their first appearance in the U.S., a subsidiary was formed in California called Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A. By 1966, Nissan had merged with Prince Motor Company and began offering passenger vehicles at the brink of the import car revolution. In 1985 the Datsun brand was completely dropped and replaced by Nissan. Today Nissan Motor Company maintains three “badge logos” under their main brand name: Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun.

“Innovation That Excites”

Nissan has manufactured a large range of vehicles that have been exported around the world since the 1950s, including fair amounts of memorable sports cars, cars and trucks. • Datsun Fairlady 1500/1600/Roadster – this infamous sports car model was created by Datsun in Japan from 1961-1970. The name originates from the “Miss Fairlady” competition held to choose five candidates to market the vehicles. • Z-Car – this model of sports car was brought about in the 1970s and is still well sought after today. This line of vehicles established Nissan’s place in the performance vehicle market. • Nissan LEAF – the first all-electric model was launched globally in 2010 and as of 2014 was the best selling all-electric vehicle with highway capabilities.

Looking to the Future

Nissan announced in 2013 that they had plans to launch driverless cars by 2020. The technology has been installed in several LEAF models and began testing in Japan in November of 2013, with Nissan engineers evaluating the vehicles’ abilities to withstand driving performance on real roads. As one of the most profitable car companies in the world, Nissan continues to bring innovative designs and ideas to the vehicle-manufacturing world.
