Overview of Audi

Before you buy an Audi car or SUV online through CarFetch’s network of certified dealers, learn a bit of the history behind this award-winning automaker: In 1899, August Horch launched the now-famous Audi Company. Three additional German automakers joined the Audi team in 1932, each of which adding their own identity to the brand. This relationship has been immortalized on the hood of each Audi vehicle in the four interlocking rings of the iconic logo. Following the desolation of World War II, the company was forced to restructure, and was purchased by Volkswagen in 1964. Together, these two companies now sit at the forefront of automotive innovation, sharing countless technological innovations developed at the Audi lab located in Ingolstadt. Today, Audi is world-renowned for its quality engineering, technological advancements, and emphasis on comfort, luxury, and enhancing the driving experience. Several innovations have been introduced over the years, including the four-stroke engine (the Audi 72 in 1965), and impressive Quattro all-wheel drive technology. The Quattro system distributes power evenly over all four wheels for unmatched traction and stability. Originally only offered in larger vehicles, the technology made its debut in a racecar circuit in 1980. It also appeared in the Audi 80 (in 1982) and by 1984 it was available in the entire Audi line up. Quattro remains a premier Audi feature, outperforming almost every other vehicle in snowy or icy conditions. Audi vehicles made a statement in the world of luxury by offering a comprehensive suite of standard features that many other automakers make available only as options. These features include cruise control, power windows and locks, leather seats and a sunroof. Of course, these features only complement the high-end comfort and elegance provided by Audi’s superb craftsmanship and safety. Beginning with the 1968 Audi 100, the Audi name has been synonymous with luxury and style. Soon after, the Audi 200, a turbo version of the 100 was released for added performance, and “economy” versions – the Audi 80 and 90 – were also made available. As Audi continued to expand its line up, V8 – the highest-end luxury sedan – was introduced, which would later transform into one of the most sought after luxury cars on the market. All these brand numbers received a massive overhaul in 1996. This redesign included restyling, additional standard features, and new names: A4, A6, and A8. Each progressive number indicated a slightly larger and more powerful engine. The Avant station wagons were also added to the line up at this time, recognizing the of the cargo needs of families. On the flip side, recognizing the need for unbridled fun, the convertible option in the A4 (Cabriolet) was also introduced soon after, in 2003. To add to the excitement, the A6 and A8 have their sports-performance counterparts in the S6 and S8, which offer firmer suspensions, supportive seats and a V and V10 engine, respectively. The RS6 provides the ultimate in sports performance tearing it up with a turbo V10 engine that hits 550-hp. Before 2001, Audi did not have an SUV offering. Then came the Allroad Quattro crossover that was part station wagon, part SUV. Unfortunately, the Allroad was never popular in the U.S., perhaps because people just weren't ready for it at the time of its release. In 2006, a new crossover vehicle appeared on scene: the stylish and elegant A3. The Audi SUV, the full size luxury Q7 also debuted that year, giving Audi lovers a larger and more rugged option. One of Audi's most stylish and fierce looking vehicles on the road today has to be the Audi TT; with it’s spectacular rounded shape and powerful performance, it truly took people aback when it was released in 1998. It’s hidden bumpers, rounded dome, and aerodynamic design was a complete rethink of how cars should look. The TT re-energized the Audi name and has been a big influence on car design ever since, including playing a hand in the heart-stopping R8 with it’s mid-mounted engine and ferocious po
